Monument record MWX4797 - Gravel pits, The Marina, Boscombe, Bournemouth

Late nineteenth century gravel pits on the site of The Marina, Boscombe, known from historic map evidence. A gravel pit is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the south of Honeycombe Beach, but cannot be seen on recent aerial photographic coverage.

Gravel pits first marked on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map epoch 2 (1898). (1)
They are marked as 'Old Gravel Pits' on the epoch 3 (1909) map and the outline of the former gravel pits are still visible on the epoch 4 (1923) map. (2-3)
A gravel pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the south of Honeycombe Beach. The pit measures 175 m by 55 m. (4) It is not visible on the most recent comprehensive photographic coverage available to the project (5). This feature was digitally plotted as during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
