Full Description

An earthwork consisting of small rectangular features within a larger rectangular area is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1885 (1) and visible on a 1940s aerial photograph (2). It is possible it could be associated with salt making.

A rectilinear enclosure, approximately 127m x 36m, is visible as earthwork banked and ditched feature on aerial photographs of Gold Point Heath taken in 1947 (3). A grid-like pattern of smaller rectangular banks are visible within the southern end of this enclosure. This feature is considered likely to be the remains of a saltern of probable post medieval date. It was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). This feature is still visible on the most recent comprehensive imagery available to the project (4).
