Full Description

A cluster of quarry pits (?) seen on a 1940s AP. (1)

The above site has been reinterpreted as a cluster of modern World War II bomb craters. The group of up to 40 small near circular depressions were digitally plotted from aerial photographs taken in August 1947 as part of the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project {2}. It was noted that the features were not present on earlier photographs taken in August 1940 {3} and therefore they were considered most likely to be bomb craters. It was sometimes the practice of RAF pilots to release unused bombs over the sea prior to landing, these craters lying right on the cliff-edge were perhaps formed during this process.
