Summary

In Aug 1812 whilst ploughing the brow of Jordan Hill in the same field as the Roman Temple, labourers found an unbaked Roman urn filled with several hundred silver coins of the Lower Empire. The coins ranged from AD 244-286 and were chiefly from Gordian to Postumus. A late 3rd century hoard.

Full Description

Roman coin hoard found in 1812 or 1816, probably on Jordan Hill at Preston.

(SY 6982) In Aug 1812 whilst ploughing the brow of Jordan Hill in the same field as the Roman Temple, labourers found an unbaked Roman urn filled with several hundred silver coins of the Lower Empire. The coins ranged from 244-286 AD <2> and were chiefly from Gordian to Postumus. Many were obtained by Mr C Warne. <3>

Similar information, but found in 1816 not half a mile from Rimbury. <4>

(SY 698821). No further information regarding the precise site of this find was obtained during field investigation. The area indicated includes the top of the hill. <6>
