Full Description

Copper plates from Fleet found just downstream of Bridging Camp Hard. "Three small pieces of copper plates. One with nail holes. Probably scrap from repairs to copper sheathing of vessels in Portland harbour/ Portland roads. The exact location was the central Narrows just downstream of the Bridging Camp hard. The seaward half of the channel bottom consists of shingle (the landward fringe of Chesil Beach) thrown into series of pebbles waves (megaripples) towards the mid-point of the channel profile. These waves are mobilised significantly by equinoxial spring tides. The dive was undertaken on 24th March 2002, during the equinoxial period. I suspect that migration of the pebble waves exposed the previously buried plates. The three were lying in close proximity within a pebble wave trough. I initially thought that the plates were recent." (1)
