Full Description

Roman inhumation discovered during site clearance at Verne Common Road, Fortuneswell in July 1970 prior to the construction of flats. Subsequent limited investigation showed that a cist containing an inhumation and two Romano- British pots had been badly damaged by the burial of a stone coffin at a later date. Only the slab at the west end of the cist was undisturbed. The two pots were up against it. Part of the skull lay on the lid of the coffin. There were signs of other graves in the surrounding soil. <1>
