Full Description

Former Royal Naval Hospital, built circa 1901. It comprised an administration block, surgical block, medical block, officers block and service buildings. It is now a civilian hospital. <1>

The late 19th century to mid 20th century Royal Naval Hospital is visible as a structure on aerial photographs of 1946 <2> adjacent to the south of HMS Sereptia in Castletown, Portland.

The hospital buildings, located to the east and west of the Portland Railway are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 <2>. The buildings to the east of the railway have been built over and a number of the buildings to the west have been demolished or replaced. The eastern part of the site is marked on the 2nd edition OS map <3> as a hospital for infectious diseases. It comprises four buildings set parallel to each other with two smaller ancillary buildings to the north and south. A bank is shown as being located immediately around the hospital buildings on the 2nd edition OS map which could not be seen on aerial photographs. However, a bank forming part of the boundary around the hospital complex could be identified, on the eastern side. The site has now been built over. The area to the west of the railway is marked on the 2nd edition OS map as Royal Naval Sick Quarters. Six buildings have been demolished or replaced in the area of the current hospital. A further line of six buildings, with smaller ancillary buildings around them, were visible on the 1946 aerial photographs to the south of the current side. This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
