Monument record MWX4240 - 19th Century extractive pit, Lake Clay Works, Hamworthy, Poole

The Lake Clay Works were a large scale Royal Doulton ball clay quarry begun in the 19th century and continued in operation until the 1920s. The site is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1947. The site is now known as Ham Common and the clay pit is Hamworthy Lake.

Royal Doulton started extensive ball clay extraction at the Lake Clay Works in the 19th century. The works closed in the 1920s. The Ordnance Survey maps show the changing shape and extent of the clay pits and the various tramways and other features in the clay works. The clay was shipped out via a wooden pier. (1) (2) (3). The site is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1947 (4). The site is now known as Ham Common and the clay pit is Hamworthy Lake. The site is visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project.
