Full Description

Quay built in about 1780 by Thomas Hyde, it fell out of use with the development of the Middlebere Tramway in the late nineteenth century. (1-3)

A group of linear and curvilinear earthwork banks, together with the possible foundations of a rectilinear structure, are visible as on aerial photographs of Hyde's Quay, Arne, taken in 1947 (4). They are considered likely to be the remains of the former post medieval quay that is recorded here. These features were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). They are not visible on the most recent comprehensive imagery available to the project (5), the area now being much obscured by scrub.
