Summary

Neolithic finds from Portland include a chert hammerstone, a stone axe (in Dorset County Museum, Dorchester) and a polished flint axe (in Portland Museum).

Full Description

A flint hammerstone found in the Isle of PORTLAND. Actually of chert, 3ins in diameter. (1)

A ball of chert 3ins in diameter, slightly flattened on two opposite sides. (2).

An axe of hornblende schist from PORTLAND in the DORCHESTER MUSEUM. (3)

A polished axe of white flint approx. 7" long, with the sides fashioned so that they are at right angles to the long axis of the width, or flattened. The axe was found in the Isle of Portland, and is in the EVANS collection. (4)

In the PORTLAND museum is a patinated polished flint axe which is unlabelled but which probably came from PORTLAND. None of these axes were identified and no information concerning them was obtained during field investigation. One of them may be duplicated on DORSET 58SE. (5)
