Full Description

AE Coin of Antoninus Pius and fibula found 2 down on North Common, Portland. Nearby was found a silver penny of Henry III. (1)

Enamelled fibula, a flat disc 1 in diameter, with a hinged pin and catch on the back. Alternate red and green colouring in the enamel. Nearby were found two iron instruments, one resembling a pick and the other a chisel. they weighed 14 and 15lbs respectively. Inferred to be Ro. by contact with burials and R.B. material in the vicinity. (2)

COMMON below VERNE HILL C 1866. acc No 1923-37 (3).

Found in 1863; from the VERNE (4). (?Duplication of coin on Dorset 58 SE 11).

North Common extended from a little south of the VERNE (about 73 N grid) to PORTLAND HARBOUR (DORSET 58NE). (5)

Tithe maps were consulted but the name NORTH COMMON was not shown and no further information was obtained. (6)
