Full Description

A vessel with four small handles around its mouth; 5 1/2 high, max diameter 8, diameter of mouth 51/2. Found with an interment on NORTH COMMON adjacent to the CASTLE. This pot has since been lost. <1>

No further information was obtained upon this site during field investigation. NORTH COMMON extends to PORTLAND CASTLE according to various people consulted. <2>

'PORTLAND. No certain barrows remain but the site of an urnfield within a mound is known. A burial found with a four-handled biconical jor of Armorican type suggests a possible but unlocated barrow on North Common below Verne Hill (Arch. J. XXV (1868), 50 (fig.); Archaeologia XLIII (1871), 339 and fig. 19; L'anthropologie LV (1951), 532-5).'
