Full Description
Drew having excavated at Preston Roman villa in 1932 noted two parallel walls running E in alignment with the mosaic chamber. The N of these had a single diagonally pitched limestone course, the S one, 2ft 4inches wide at the base had two courses set in clay with a single mortared course set back above. The area between had a limestone slab floor, which was well worn, partly over-lying the wall foundations. Where the paving was missing there were patches of ash and at the E end there was a stokehole and rectangular oven or furnace of 2 and a half ft by 1 and three quarter ft that appeared contemporary with the floor.(1)
