Full Description

A stone boundary wall was revealed running along the southern side of the medieval town ditch during a watching brief to the rear of 41 East Street, Bridport, undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 1999. This wall was constructed in a foundation trench dug into the upper fill of the town ditch, along its southern side. It survived as a drystone rubble foundation 0.5m wide and up to two rough courses high. This wall was probably a boundary wall marking the rear of the burgage plot of 41 East Street. No trace of a similar wall was found in the adjacent plot to the east behind 43 East Street. No conclusive dating evidence was recovered, but the foundations cut through the upper layer in the town ditch which contained 18th century pottery. (1) (2) (3)
