Type and Period (1)

Full Description

Layer of yellowish-brown soil encountered at the base of evaluation trenches, identified as relict buried soil. Date uncertain but possibly predates medieval agriculture. Only dating evidence was abraded Late Iron Age Pottery. Seals a possible Lynchet (WX3401). Throughout site, residual finds point to long period of exploitation in area. Earliest activity represented by Mesolithic chert artefacts at southern end of site. Early Neolithic activity represented by occasional flake of chert but spread of Late Neolithic/Bronze Age chert more widespread. Iron Age activity indicated by residual potsherds and likely to represent background scatter rather than settlement on site. Roman pottery concentrated in south-east corner of site close to area where Roman burials previously discovered. Several post-medieval finds also recovered. (1)
