Full Description

The first Town Bridge was built when the towns of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis were united and it had 17 arches and a drawbridge. It was replaced by a timber bridge in 1597. this was wholly or partly replaced between 1669 and 1673. This was in turn succeeded by bridges in 1713 and 1741. In 1770 a new bridge was built 70 yds to the west, communicating with St Nicholas Street, when the port was enlarged. The present bridge was built on the site of the old bridges communicating with St Thomas Street. <1>

During the invasion scare of 1588 it was noted that Weymouth had no bridge. <1>
