Full Description

Watching brief during excavations at Portland Castle revealed a large number of in situ and residual flint and chert tools most of which appear to date to the Middle Bronze Age or later. Prehistoric deposits occur widely across the site above the natural and below layers containing Roman pottery (findspot WX3354). Ample evidence for knapping activity at the site and high potential for the survival of prehistoric remains (1)

Evaluation trench excavated with the 'Governor's Garden' to the south-east of the castle produced an assemblage of c.250 prehistoric flints, largely Portland chert. Includes a barbed and tanged arrowhead from c. 2000 BC (2)
