Summary

Gloucester Lodge, built for Duke of Gloucester in about 1780 as holiday home. Chosen in 1789 as a summer residence by George III. Much altered around the middle of the nineteenth century, and used as an hotel.

Full Description

No 85 The Esplanade, Gloucester Row. (The Gloucester Hotel). The building incorporates Gloucester Lodge built for the Duke of Gloucester circa 1780. George III's choice of the house as a summer residence in 1789 led to the great expansion of the town as a resort. Considerably altered, especially circa 1850. <1-2>
