Full Description
Four Iron Age pits were discovered during an evaluation excavation by Wessex Archaeology in 2001. The pits measured between 0.83m and 1.17m in diameter and between 0.29m and 0.87m deep. They were filled with brown sands containing Later Bronze Age-Middle Iron Age pottery, residual worked flint, charcoal flecks and one contained some burnt stone. Several of these pits contained large quantities of pottery. This represents the first evidence of Iron Age activity west of the Double Dykes earthwork in this vicinity. (1)
