Full Description

<1> Papworth, M, 1992, Brownsea Island, Dorset. Wessex region, 112,553 (Unpublished document). SWX1390.

This site is described in the 1859 sales particulars (DCRO photocopy 167) as the tramway or railway which is “laid from the Seymour pit district (112087), about one and a quarter mile in length, with sidings to the Seymour pit pier, at which marketed clay is shipped; also to the new pier near the potteries a substantially framed structure having a turn-table on the platform, enabling three vessels to load and unload at the same time; the water here is of sufficient depth for vessels upwards of 200 tons burden to draw alongside. The rails are also continued to the small and large pottery works”. The tramway linked all the buildings built between the beach and coastal cliffs along the west coast. The present path from Large Pottery (112088) to Maryland (112092) follows the line of the railway which appears to have been constructed on a raft of broken tile and brick. Beyond Maryland the route of the tramway has been removed by coastal erosion except in the vicinity of Seymour brickyard (112087). Visited 25/2/1992.
