Full Description
Pier built to serve pottery and brickyard on Brownsea Island. (1)
<1> Papworth, M, 1992, Brownsea Island, Dorset. Wessex region, 112,552 (Unpublished document). SWX1390.
The 1859 map (DCRO photocopy 167) and the 1873 map (D263/T4) both show a group of buildings on the west coast of the Island, linked by a tramway (112553) to Maryland (112092) to the north and the Little Pottery (112089) to the south beside a siding leading to the “old pier”. There was a carpenter’s shop, a smithy, a workman’s mess and sleeping rooms here with a gravel and alum pit cut into the cliffs on the east side. There were considerable deposits of tile waste on the beach and in the beach cliff here but no in situ wall footings were identified. Visited 25/2/1992.
