Full Description
<1> Papworth, M, 1992, Brownsea Island, Dorset. Wessex region, 112, 080 (Unpublished document). SWX1390.
Medieval pottery has been recovered from service trenches in the vicinity of Brownsea Castle according to Mr Bromby. Some of this pottery is held at Poole Museum and some is in the possession of Norman Field (...) who conducted a small excavation here in 1964. Mr Jarvis of Poole Museum dates the material to the 12th – 16th centuries. Mr Field’s trenches were excavated 30m south of the farm buildings and spaced at 15m intervals for 137m at an angle of 248 degrees. He found soil depth and occupation evidence decreasing towards the west. Trench 1, which had a particularly deep soil and was closest to the Castle, contained a sherd of medieval scratch marked pottery. Visited 25/2/1992.
