Undated field system at Corfe Castle Estate. {1}
<1> Papworth M, 1994, Eastington, Acton, Westwood, Wilkswood, New Barn, Corfe Castle Estate, Wessex Region, 112,344 (Unpublished document). SWX1388.
Earthworks in the field on the east side of Eastington farm buildings appear to be the remains of a celtic field system in use during the Bronze Age to Romano British period. The best preserved area is on the east half of the field where terraces up to 0.3m high define small rectangular fields on average 0.2 hectare in area. On the western side of the modern field, trackways overlie part of the field system. The current track crosses the centre of the field from north of south and the causeway of a grass covered track branches from this and leads to the farm in the west. It crosses a prominent lynchet 1.5m high. The south wall of the current field rebuilt in 1991 but follows the alignment of a wall shown on Woodward’s map of 1775. This wall crosses the ‘celtic’ field system, 112,344 continues into the downland to the south. The west part of the field was enclosed by 1585. Treswell’s map names the enclosure as Park Mead.
