A large barracks was built at the foot of Ballard Down during the 1914-1918 war. The aerial photograph RAF CPE/UK/1821: 2396 taken in shows the foundations of the buildings. The main camp lay just beyond the SW boundary of the property but terraces of building can be seen within Whitecliff at SZ027808.
