Monument record MWX2926 - Manor Farm (Romano-British phase), Portesham

Roman occupation and funerary activity represented the most extensive phase of the site. Plot 9 contained 3 well-preserved inhumations, all within grave cuts. Plot 10 contained 2 further burials

A total of 5 inhumations observed within excavated areas (plots 6 and 9). At least one of these burials yielded traces of a wooden coffin and the head of a sow had been placed within the grave. An iron object, possibly a hinge, had no obvious function within the construction of a wooden coffin and was thought to be indicative of re-used wood forming the coffin fabric.(1,2,3)
