Full Description
Initially identified by archaeological evaluation, July 2001, the burial was then excavated in October 2001. (1)
Upon excavation the fill of the grave was found to contain burnt flint and undiagnostic fired clay. Although a broken flint flake was also recovered, this was thought to be in a residual context. It was not therefore possible to securely date the burial. The grave was cut into the natural clays which had also formed the bed of a former stream. The skeletal remains had slumped down and to the west following the gradient of the underlying clay. At some time following the burial, the meandering stream channel had cut into the lowermost part of the grave resulting in the partial erosion of the skull of the individual. (2)
