Full Description
Archaeological Observations by Poole Museum Service during alterations to the Custom House in 1995-6 revealed traces of earlier building remains beneath layers of post-medieval/modern building rubble. The remains comprised a limestone wall footing aligned roughly E-W and parts of a stone flag floor. These may be associated with the 18th century 'Red Lion Coffee House' or its late 18th century rebuilding into the first Custom House, which was destroyed by fire in 1813. (1) (2) (3)
