Full Description
Hengistbury Head was PLUTO (PipeLine Under The Ocean) training area during the Second World War. In 1944 an 11-mile loop of pipe was laid in Poole Bay. Two buildings and six engine bases were constructed on the east side of the Double Dykes and the pipeline crossed the beach at the end of the double dykes. The pipeline and the buildings and equipment were removed at the end of the war. (1)
Cabling and other material has been reported in the cliff face at Hengistbury Head and said to be connected with PLUTO. (2) This seems unlikely and is probably associated with other military activity on Hengistbury Head.
