Monument record MWX280 - Quarries, Chapel Hill, Abbotsbury

A group of quarries to the south and east of Chapel Hill, which itself lies to the south west of the village of Abbotsbury. It is possible that these quarries were worked to produce stone used in the construction of St Peters Abbey. Site visible on aerial photographs.

A group of quarries to the south and east of Chapel Hill, which itself lies to the south west of the village of Abbotsbury. The quarries are visible as a complex of depressions, variable in form, with dimensions of 5 metres to 10 metres across and up to circa 0.5 metres to 1 metre in depth. A larger quarry is located to the east side of the hill. It seems likely that these quarries were worked to produce stone used in the construction of St Peters Abbey. <1>

The quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and Lidar imagery <2-3> and were digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
