Full Description

A rapid examination of air photography suggests the presence of a possible trackway, possibly of Medieval date, visible as earthworks of a hollow between possibly two banks, south of Abbey Barn. (1)

Subsequent examination of RAF air photos dated 1947 and held at DCC suggest that the earthwork described above may have been confused with the southern precinct boundary of St. Peter's Abbey, Abbotsbury. This feature (pref. ref. 1 001 003 K) does appear to comprise a ditch between two banks on the air photos. Alternatively, a possible farm track or slight hollow can be seen running approximately SE from the south side of the abbey tithe barn towards the precinct boundary (2).

Abbotsbury Abbey southern precinct boundary is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. The double-banked feature has previously been interpreted as a hollow way of Medieval date. The feature was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project <3>.
