Full Description

Items recovered from the Chesil Cannon Site and ascribed to the De Hoop (Hope), lost on Chesil Bank, Portland: 2 x rivets, 1 x branding iron, 1 x canvas needle, 1 x silver coin (1); 1 x cannon (on loan from Weymouth Museum) (2); 1 x Half bar shot. 1 x Small iron concreted clump, 6" x 5", probably a small cannonball about 2lbs size (3). The Hope was a privateer returning home from the West Indies and was blown onto the Chesil and wrecked on 16 January 1749.

Additional finds include copper hull sheathing and copper alloy pins, which suggest a late eighteenth/ nineteenth
century date and therefore not the Hope (G Le Pard 2006)
