Summary

A series of linear banks and ditches to the east of Seatown. They include parallel lynchets of presumably medieval date as well as field boundaries which may be of later post medieval date. The features are visible as earthworks on lidar taken in 2008 and aerial photographs from 1942.

Full Description

There two strip lynchets on Ridge Cliff. (1)
Lynchets lying in shelter of Ridge Cliff. Indicate that levelled fields created as a result of fairly intensive agricultural regime. Fields centred on SY42379174 . Lynchets up to 2.4m high although slumping has augmented their dimensions and most have a denuded earthen field bank with a ditch on the inner face along the top edge (2 & 3).

Medieval Lynchets, Ridge Cliff and Puddletons, Seatown. The survey was conducted by English Heritage Exeter Office in the Spring of 2002 for the National Trust. The purpose of the survey was to identify and survey the archaeology of part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
