gross tonnage

'A couple of boats were also picked up, one of which bore the name of the PALLAS of Weymouth. A party of fishermen and others were on the Sandbank, at the entrance of Poole harbour, during the height of the gale yesterday morning, and they report having seen two vessels go down a short distance from the shore. Apparently all hands were lost. No less than from 15 to 18 sail were observed at one time in Studland Bay, the fate of which is entirely unknown, excepting the ELIZABETH and ELIZA. Such a gale has not been experienced on this portion of the coast for the past 30 years.' (4)
