Summary

Remains of the 1942 wreck of a Dutch cargo vessel which foundered 1.5 miles east of Handfast Point, after detonating a mine. She was a steel-hulled motor coaster.

Full Description

Built: 1937 Builder: Gear. van Dieppe Where Built: Waterhuizen Propulsion: Screw driven, oil engine Master: B G Visser Crew: 8 (this appears to be the 6 Dutchmen and 2 DEMS gunners, duplicated as passengers below) Crew Lost: 6 Passengers: 2 Passengers Lost: 2 Date of Loss Qualifier: A Vessel struck a mine off Anvil Point. Crew consisted of six Dutchmen and two English DEMs gunners. (3)

Cargo consisted of 44 tons of coal. (5)

Sinking position given as 079degs, 16 compass cross bearings from Old Harry Rock. Was carrying 440 tons coal. 01-JUL-1942 Position 50 38 46N, 01 52 31W.

27-NOV-1943 Least depth over wreck 6 fathoms.
04-FEB-1947 Least depth now 7 fathoms 4 feet.
06-NOV-1950 Drift sweep - clear at 33, foul at 34 feet in general depth 51 feet.
30-MAY-1951 Dispersed to 46 feet.
11-AUG-1951 Drift sweep clear at 45 feet. General depth 51 feet. Only 2 pieces of this wreck remain and do not protrude more than 1foot above seabed in 50 36 46N, 01 51 31W.
24-OCT-1968 Wreck fairly well broken up. plate, framework, girders, etc.
20-JUL-1992 Examined in 50 38 45.8N, 01 52 31.1W. Appears to be broken into two main parts orientated 000/180 deg. The southern part has least echosounder depth 12.4m and the northern 12.7m, side scan sonar height 2.5M in general depth 15m. No scour.

A brass speaking tube and mouthpiece reported to the Receiver of Wreck. (Droit A/102).(6)

A porthole, a decklight, a fire extinguisher, a piece of coal and 2 valves recovered from this wreck, position 50 38.79N 001 52.51W, expressed as 1.5 miles E of Handfast Point. (Droit A/2769).(6)

A copper/brass ships bridge telegraph with no glass or dial, and a compass bowl and gimbal, without compass, recovered from this wreck position 50 38 46N 001 52 31W (Droit A/3182) (6)
