Full Description
`Poole the 22nd of Feb: This afternoon we had a most violent gale of wind, which drove 17 sail of ships from their moorings, and occasioned a shocking sight; some of which were carried near a league, others lost their masts, and some their bowsprits, besides being otherwise greatly damaged, so that several of them appear like perfect wrecks. (1)(2) `It is remarkable, that tomorrow it will be twenty-two years since a like storm happened here. (1) This would appear to be the same storm as described from Portsmouth in the same issue of LL: `Portsmouth the 23rd of Feb: Yesterday about three o'clock in the afternoon, we had here a start calm, presently the wind rose and blesh [sic] fresh at SE, then instantly veered round to the NW and blew a hurricane, which continued near an hour...
