Full Description

The site of a ropery, identified from the 1848 Kelly's Directory. The site was owned by Joseph Balston a twine and shoe thread manufacturer in Barrack Street. (1) The 1840 Bradpole Tithe map states that Joseph Balston owned and occupied a 'House, Garden, Yard, & Buildings' on the site of 24 and 26 Barrack Street (2). This is most likely the site of the ropery. Joseph Balston also owned and occupied a 'House and Garden' at 30-32 Barrack Street (2).

The 1855 Post Office Directory lists 'Balston, Joseph, merchant & manufacturer of line, twine & shoethread, Barrack Street' (3). There is no entry in the 1859 Post Office Directory so the works may have closed by this time.
