'A violent storm raged in South Dorset on Saturday morning, and there was a heavy fall of snow . . . The French ketch DIANA went ashore on Peveril Ledge, off Swansea [sic] early on Saturday morning. The lifeboat service was summoned but could not get out. The crew, consisting of mother, father, son and another man, were saved by the rocket apparatus.' (3)

Sources (1) and (2) state that the vessel was English, registered in Rye, and indicate the 1st of April as the reporting date of loss; the publication date of source (4) suggests that the 1st of April was the actual date of loss, and states the vessel's nationality as French. The composition of the crew in (4) suggests the vessel's primary function as a leisure craft. (5)
