Site of former bolling mill on the River Brit. Later converted to a corn mill for crushing oats and beans for the brewery horses. Disused by 1902. Now ruined.

Full Description

Site of former Port Mill, on the River Brit. This was a bolling mill later converted c. 1890 for crushing oats and beans for the horses in the nearby brewery by Job Legg, the owner of the brewery (1).

The site was labelled ‘Cottage Factory & Port Mead’, occupied by Robert Turner and owned by the Reverend Charles Fryer on the 1843 Symondsbury Tithe Map and apportionment (2).

It is marked as ‘Port Mill, Corn’ on the 1890 Ordnance Survey map (3). The 1902 Ordnance Survey map shows it as disused (4). The building was shown on the 1930 Ordnance Survey map but is not identified as a mill (5). By the 1980s, it was a ruin (1). In 1988 the channel was cleared and the remains of the wheel removed and the walls stabilised as part of the Flood Prevention Scheme (6).
