Full Description
`Extract of a letter from Poole, Jan.13:...also lost near the same place, and beat to pieces, a sloop laden with brandy, and 3 of the hands drowned. (1) `The KING OF PRUSSIA, Long, from Bordeaux for Hamburg, is ashore off Kimmeridge, but part of the cargo will be saved. And, near the same place, a sloop with brandy is lost, and 3 men drowned. (2) `Newcastle, February 24. We hear that a ship belonging to Portsoy, David Allan master, from Bordeaux, was lately lost near Pool, in Dorsetshire. The master, the mate, and a boy were lost; the ship was broke to pieces, and about half the cargo lost. Had not the Collector of Pool and some other gentlemen in the country interposed, the barbarians who lived upon the coast, would have carried off every sixpence worth of the cargo, and very possibly murdered the unhappy sufferers for endeavouring to hinder them. (3) Master: David Allan (3) Crew Lost: 3 (1)(2)(3)
The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
