Full Description

Foundered in dense fog on the Ledges in heavy seas on the last leg of her maiden voyage. Distress signals, flares and radio messages brought out tugs and the lifeboat, which were driven back by the heavy weather. The captain thought the vessel was breaking up and ordered all her crew to abandon ship in two boats, only seven men reaching the shore alive. Thirty-seven drowned in Chapmans Pool, while the wreck remained intact less than a mile offshore in eight fathoms of water. Frederick Kelly of HMS VICTORY, stationed with the local coastguards, was court-martialled on 13.08 for negligence of duty in that he had not at once taken the necessary steps to inform the authorities of the windward lifeboat that the TREVEAL was ashore. Charged with negligent performance of duty, the charge was proved and he was dismissed from his ship and severely reprimanded. The cargo from the wreck was salvaged and brought into Weymouth, where it was hung on the hedges to dry at Wyke Regis.
