Full Description

The rescue involved the first service of the RNLB MARY HEAPE, stationed at Kimmeridge. The rescue began at 11pm when the vessel went ashore in a south west hurricane. The lifeboat went out, but after a desperate struggle the 28ft, 1.5 ton boat rowing five oars only was forced back on the beach, unable to stem the sea swirling round the eastern point of the bay. At daylight when there was a slight improvement in the weather, they made a second attempt which was successful. Using a line thrown over the wreck by a rocket apparatus, they hauled the lifeboat to and fro until the whole crew were landed. The coxswain was William Strickland, a fisherman.
