Built: 1882 Builder: Palmer Where Built: Newcastle upon Tyne Propulsion: screw-driven, 2 cylinder triple expansion engine Horsepower: 178 Boilers: 2 Crew: 12 Master: J J Huntley Owner: T.W. Elliot, Newcastle upon Tyne Additional Construction Details: p.deck 26ft; b.deck 57ft; f.castle 33ft Date of Loss Qualifier: A Was wrecked after being driven ashore at Freshwater in wind conditions SE force 5. (1) HILDEGARDE, steamer, total loss on Freshwater Ledges.(6) Lost Kimmeridge Ledges, Dorset.(7) On 10-NOV-1990, the London steamer HILDEGARDE, with Spanish iron ore for Newcastle drove ashore at Freshwater and her heavy cargo contributed to her rapid disintegration.(2) The HILDEGARDE on her way to the Tyne on 12-NOV-1900, she ran onto Kimmeridge ledges, her bottom torn she quickly became a loss. Her remains are now well broken up.(3) The HILDEGARDE ran aground on the ledges off Kimmeridge and eventually broke up half a mile off Freshwater Ledge. The wreck was extensively salvaged and the remains are broken up and dispersed among the ledges and kelp beds.(4) Additional source:
