Full Description

`...driven on shore in Chapman's Pool during the late gale...The vessel is being rapidly unloaded...It is hoped the whole [cargo] will be got on shore by this [Saturday] afternoon. There does not seem to be the slightest chance of saving the vessel, which is in a bad state, having broken her back, and had her stern posts knocked away; at present she lies high and dry on the rocks, at HW there being only about 2 feet of water under her keel. (2)

Vessel drove ashore high and dry on the rocks, the captain thinking that the high ground was the Isle of Wight. All her crew and passengers were saved by the rocket apparatus and Coastguards. Great efforts were made during the following week by Captain Cosens to save the cargo of the vessel driven ashore in a hurricane. She is rapidly being unloaded and the Receiver for Weymouth, R G Cutesman, after taking depositions, took charge of the cargo being landed, which consisted of 160 tons of coffee; 40 tons of cocoa; 60 tons of mahogany, of which upwards of 2400 bags of coffee and cocoa were brought in on Tuesday night in mint condition, the remaining 1600 bags in bad condition and very damaged. There was not the slightest chance of saving the vessel, which had broken her back. Her stern post was knocked away and the copper was being stripped from her hull in anticipation of her breaking up. She was insured for £3000. The hull was auctioned on 10th March 1866 where it lay. (3)
