Built: 1817 Where Built: Southampton Master: Jameson Crew Lost: all except 1 Owner: Walford (1820) Construction: copper sheathing; 1 deck Date of Loss Qualifier: A `Weymouth, 15th Dec. The VIGILANT, Jameson, from Hambro to Mogadore, appeared off Lulworth Cove yesterday, waterlogged, almost immediately after struck and went to pieces, and only the mate saved. (1) On 14-DEC-1825 the VIGILANT had been wrecked at Lulworth but in spite of the utmost efforts of Lt Prior R.N. and his coastguard crew only one man was saved. The official citation said Owen Lloyd in particular manifested great alacrity in throwing a rope which Thomas Parker, the mate was saved and drawn up a high cliff. Lt Prior had risen from a sick bed to give the necessary directions to his men on this occasion. Parker was the only man saved, the vessel having almost immediately gone to pieces. Lloyd received the Institutions silver medal and a sum of money was distributed among the crew (5)
