Full Description

A rope walk is marked on the 1888 Ordnance Survey 1:500 map. This shows a long narrow building, with an open east side, running along the western side of the plot. This is presumably a covered rope walk. There are another two small buildings at the southern end of the plot. (1)

The rope walk is still marked on the 1902 Ordnance Survey map, but by this date the the covered walk appears to have been demolished as it is no longer shown on the map (2). The rope walk probably went out of use in the first quarter of the 20th century as it is no longer depicted on the 1930 Ordnance Survey map (3).

Ropewalk. This ropewalk appears to have been an open one, extending southwards from the backs of the buildings along the south side of East Street down to the headrace for folly mill. The walk remains as a very long, narrow open garden with some rubble stone walling at the south end. A brick wall about 2 metres high with regularly spaced pilasters appears to run the whole length on the east side. (4)
