Full Description

`...carrying ordnance stores, was run foul of by the transport HARMONY, which was in the same convoy, causing the HANNAH to go on shore near Hills Harbour. (4) `The HANNAH, Hickman, (ordnance transport) is on shore about 4 miles from Weymouth. (2) This vessel may have been lost in the gale known to have occurred over the 17th/18th-NOV-1795 and mentioned in the same issue of LL. (2) Master: Hickman Date of Loss Qualifier: R

David Carter suggests the place of wrecking may be at Osmington Mills, the distance is about right and the shoal offshore is known as Hannah's Ledges. Gordon le Pard thinks the otherwise unknown place name 'Hills harbour' may be a reference to Osmington Mills, suggesting that in the 18th century the area may have been known simply as ‘The Mills’.

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
