Full Description

Rope walk shown on 1888 Ordnance Survey 1:500 map. <1>

Ropewalk. The ropewalk ran southwards from the buildings behind the south side of East Street down to the headrace of Folly mill. The plot is still evident and the line of buildings shown on the 1:500 plan seems to have been extended southwards to the full length. This range now comprises three phases of 2-storeyed buildings at the north end and a long, single storied, slate-roofed building running southwards to a two-storied, mid- to late-nineteenth century, slate-roofed rubble stone block across the end of the plot. The western half of the plot remains as an open space and is separated from ropewalk number 76 by a continuous brick wall with regular pilasters on both sides. High on this wall at the north end is mounted an iron wall-box for a horizontal shaft. <2>
