(1) 11-FEB, Boulogne for fishing, in ballast, stranded off Blacknore point.
The Turenne was a French trawler which was wrecked at Clay Hope on Portland on the 12th February 1913. Her cargo of fish was quickly salvaged, but the vessel proved to be more difficult. Inspection showed that she had four holes in her hull and she was thought to be a total wreck.
A Portland quarry owner, Mr F. J. Barnes, had other ideas and bought the wreck for very little. He managed to get patches over the holes, drag her off and tow her round to Castletown Pier in Portland Harbour. Here she was finally broken up, making Mr. Barnes a considerable profit.(5)
