Full Description

Master: Ostra (2); Astra (5) Crew: 7 Crew Lost: 4 Date of Loss Qualifier: A `Whilst working in the anchorage, grounded and then ran into the schooner TRITON of Emden, master Bakker. The collision caused the galliot to sink in a very short time, only the captain, his brother and a boy being saved. (1)(2)(6) `Bridport 16th April: The TRITON, of Emden, Boakter, from Cardiff to Bremen, put in here today making water, having been run into whilst at anchor the previous night, at Chisel (sic) near Portland, by a Dutch galliot, which appeared to have only one man on deck at the helm, and which almost immediately went down. (3) `A galliot belonging to Rotterdam...whilst working into the anchorage in Chissel Cove, run into a schooner lying at anchor... (4) `The vessel which foundered on the 16th...is ascertained to have been the MARIA JOHANNA... (5) 10-APR-1852, MARIA JOHANNA of Rotterdam, Liverpool to Librau with a cargo of salt was lost in Chesil Cove in wind ESE and the loss of 4 crew from a collision. (6)
