The following day the beach was strewn with wool, the captain and 11 men drowned. She was coming up Channel 76 days out of Tasmania, a ship that had set many previous records to and from Australia. The captain had been able to make no observations for several days and an extra sharp lookout had been kept for land. The vessel missed stays in Lyme Bay and stranded on Chesil Beach. Her crew members lost might well have been saved had she not fallen over to seaward, when she immediately began to break up. The rocket apparatus was brought to the scene by the coastguards but was too late to save the entire crew. (1)(4)
